Why is Obama for welfare?

It is a myth, spread by his political opponents, that President Obama is "for" welfare. During a political campaign, various claims are made, and many of these claims are exaggerated or totally false. The myth that President Obama wants everyone to be on welfare is an example of campaign rhetoric by his opponents, but there are no facts to support it.

Like many other presidents, Mr. Obama understands that sometimes, people are in a crisis or down on their luck, and he believes we should help them. His own mother was temporarily on food stamps, for example, after his father left the family when Barack was a baby. But there is no evidence the president wants people to stay on welfare, nor has he weakened the work requirement, contrary to political ads from his opponent.
