Dreaming is a function of the subconscious (unconscious) mind, which is not particularly interested in the plans of the conscious (waking) mind. So if one attempts to have an Out of Body Experience, or OBE, while sleeping, the subconscious mind can simply refuse to cooperate. The bad dreams might reflect one's disturbed or uncomfortable sleep, particularly if one is using recorded messages in the attempt to receive subliminal direction.

> Questions about OBEs and other vaguely esoteric practices are difficult to address because there is no body of scientifically validated literature exploring the phenomenon or even confirming its reality. Materials promoting and teaching about OBEs are generally based on anecdotal reports and the claims of individuals without verifiable evidence. So the warning, "buyer beware" should be taken seriously.
