In 1823 a revolution in Mexico removed Emperor Augustin from power, and in that same year the United Provinces was formed to the central five American states under General Jose Arce. When this was dissolved, El Salvador was able to gain their independence.
Yellow fever was here long before the Panama Canal. It was originally brought over with mosquitoes from Africa. Historians thought that the mosquitoes picked up yellow fever from monkeys. It is believed that boast would pick up the mosquitoes in Central America and brought them to the United States. The first United States epidemic break out was in Philadelphia.
It's slightly complicated: Spain's Central American provinces (including what's now Honduras) proclaimed independence jointly on 15 September 1821, but then followed periods of union with Mexico and restored joint independence (1823) as the United Provinces of Central America; Honduras finally proclaimed its own independence on 15 November 1838. Though 1838 marks the start of the start of the modern-day republic's existence as a separate independent state, Honduras (along with the other formerly united republics) celebrates Independence Day on September 15, marking the break with Spain in 1821.
