They were cursed because they each took at least one piece of Aztec gold from Cortez's cursed chest. It made it so that they would be greedy as they were, but could never be satisfied with or by anything (plus they couldn't die). To free themselves of the curse, every Aztec gold coin had to be returned to Cortez's chest, and each individual had to give some of his own blood to free himself in particular.
