Not all historians would agree that slavery was a "necessary" evil.
In colonial America, slavery was a cheaper option was to running plantations than hiring laborers.
Slaves weren't usually (if ever) paid for work, they often lived in broken-down buildings, their food was not high-quality.... etc.
So I guess the shortest answer to this question would be:
slavery was probably the cheapest and easiest way to run a plantation or farm.

Slavery had become entrenched in the South due to their agricultural economy. The way things were set up, slavery was necessary for the way of life that had developed there. There was no painless way to end the practice even as moral objections arose over it. Most whites believed that they were ordained to be the superior race and that blacks were not fully human but were created to serve as inferiors and could not manage by themselves even if they were freed from slavery.
Firstly slavery has not ended. Institutionalised slavery has become a thing of the past. By far, the most important factor that brought and end to it was economics. Certain people influenced its demise and there was also an awakening to the immorality of the practice. The coming of the machine age, brought about by the industrial revolution, did more than any country or individual towards the ending this despicable inhumanity. Slavery became economically less profitable.
