History gives us four major reasons for moving away from one's homeland. The first is war. People get out of an area where there is war. The image of masses of people on foot, clogging the roads, heading in the same direction is well known and well recognized. And, sometimes families don't want their sons conscripted into the military, so they leave for that reason. The second is famine brought on by drought or pestilence. This happened within the U.S. in the 1930s. The third is religious persecution. This is why the Pilgrims came to North America in the fall of 1620. The fourth is financial opportunity and betterment. In the U.S. we have experienced influxes of people for all the above reasons. However, sometimes people move to places where their relatives have moved. They move to the new country to join their family already there. In Europe, the northern Europeans migrate to the Mediterranean shores in the winter time. The same thing happens in the U.S. with our "snowbirds," who leave their homes in the northern tier states and winter in Quartzite and Yuma, AZ, and other warmer, southerly climes.
