A:Early in the Common Era, Jewish scholars, noting that man (both male and female together) was created in Genesis 1:26, before Eve alone was created in Genesis 2:22. They decided that these were two separate creation events and that Eve was therefore not really the first woman. They developed a midrash that Adam's first wife was Lilith, but that she flew away because Adam would not allow her to be on top when having sex. Afterwards, God created Eve to be Adam's second wife. Thus, Adam never divorced his first wife, Lilith, as she left him because she insisted on sexual equality.

Alphabet of Ben Sira, usually dated between the eighth and tenth centuries CE, is considered to be the oldest extant written form of the story of Lilith as Adam's wife.
