Yes, food is actually pushed toward the stomach through the esophagus, an approximately 10 inch long and 1 inch in diameter (in adults) muscular tube leading to the stomach. The esophagus is lined with smooth muscle, a type of muscle that contracts involuntarily (without us making it contract). Food and water entering the esophagus does not drop down and fall into the stomach; instead it is pushed through by waves of contractions (squeezes) from the bands of muscles that encircle the esophagus (of course, gravity does help a little bit). These contractions are known as peristalsis ("pear-ih-stall-sis"). Once food or water reaches the end of the esophagus, a valve called a sphincter ("sfink-tur") closes so it can't come back up! Peristalsis is so strong that it can actually enable a person to swallow food or water while upside down!

Eating upside down would be difficult due to gravity pulling the food back toward your mouth. Your body's natural reflexes would likely prevent you from being able to swallow food while in that position. Additionally, it could also increase the risk of choking.

due to the muscles in your oesophagus the food is forced down to your stomach however if you drink upside down it is not possible as the muscles don't work on liquid

ANS2:The peristaltic waves of your digestive tract will keep the food moving in the correct direction regardless of your orientation. Swallowing does not depend on gravity. Even upside down, the food will go to your stomach...If you're trying to drink upside down, I'll bet you will pour a good amount into your nose until you get practice.

Because peristalsis forces the food down the oesophagus into the stomach. Peristalsis is the contraction of the muscles of the digestive tract - which sends 'waves' of motion towards the stomach.

IT is called Peristalsis.

Here is a link that describes the process in greater detail.

Humans don't need gravity to swallow, although, interestingly, birds (i.e. canaries) do.
