Nuclear waste is radioactive. This means that the nucleus of the atoms of the material is not stable and will throw of energy to achieve a stable state. The energy will be in one of four forms: Alpha, beta, gamma, and neutons and is often more than one of these types. This energy is called "ionizing radiation" which is radiation which will knock electrons off of the atoms it strikes. If those atoms are in molecules in cells in living tissue, enough damage will cause the cell to die. Alpha radiation is a helium nucleus, two neutrons and two protons with no electrons. The particle has a large electrical charge and high mass (comparitively) and is thus very ionizing. Beta radiation is a high energy electron. Some charge and a little mass. Gamma radiation is a photon of high energy light. No charge, no mass, lots of energy. A neutron is a neutron. No charge, some mass, can be absorbed by the nucleus of another atom and destablize it (make it radioactive).

How long does coal waste last?

Coal waste can persist in the environment for hundreds to thousands of years. The heavy metals and toxins in coal waste can leach into the surrounding soil and water, posing long-term environmental and health risks. Proper containment and treatment are essential to minimize the impact of coal waste on the environment.

Why is waste coal good for the environment?

Waste coal can be good for the environment because it helps to remediate and clean up abandoned mine sites by using up leftover coal waste. By burning waste coal to generate electricity, it helps to reduce the amount of waste material and pollutants that would otherwise leach into the environment. Additionally, it provides a use for a material that would otherwise go to waste.

Waste substances that contaminate the environment?

harmful fluids and chemicals

_____ substance are organic waste that are NOT harmful to the environment when decomposed.?

Biodegradable substances are organic waste that are not harmful to the environment when decomposed, as they break down into simpler, non-toxic compounds. They reduce the impact of waste on ecosystems and help in recycling nutrients back into the environment.

How does Coal impact the environment?

Coal impacts the environment by contributing to air pollution through the release of carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and other harmful pollutants. Mining coal can also lead to habitat destruction, soil erosion, and water pollution. Additionally, burning coal for energy generation is a major contributor to climate change.

Is coal poisonous?

Coal itself is not poisonous, but burning coal produces harmful pollutants such as carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and mercury that can be harmful when released into the air or water. In addition, coal mining can also release harmful substances into the environment if not properly managed.
