Why are whales hunted?

Whales were hunted mainly for these products:

• lamp oil (from sperm oil)
• margarine and cooking oil (from whale oil)
• candles, soaps, cosmetics and perfumes (from sperm oil)
• corsets and umbrellas (from sperm oil)
• whale-meat for human consumption
• animal feed (from meat meal)
• fertilizer (from bone meal)
• string for tennis rackets (from tendons)

Whaling has occurred for thousands of years. The main whale product was whale oil (from melted down blubber) used for making oil, soaps, candles, cosmetics, and for the manufacturing of margarine. By the end of the 1800s, mineral oils from underground deposits replaced the need for whale oil. Today, blubber is still used for soap and makeup to give it a glossy shine. Some cultures eat blubber.

Whales were also hunted for their baleen, or "whale bone." They used it to make buggy whips, carriage springs, corset stays, fishing rods, hoops, and women's skirts.

Today, whale bones are boiled down into glue then ground down to make fertilizer. The bones and teeth are made into tools. Whale teeth are also used for jewelry.

Today, whales are primarily hunted for food. In Japan and some Inuit and Greenlandic cultures, whale meat is a delicacy.

Finally, some whaling conduct what they call "scientific research" to see if whaling can be done sustainably.

They are killed for many things. Whales are killed for meat and for money and for ambergris.

Ambergris.... is a solid, waxy, flammable substance of a dull gray or blackish color produced in the digestive system of and regurgitated by sperm whales.

Freshly produced ambergris has a marine, fecal odor. However, as it ages, it acquires a sweet, earthy scent commonly likened to the fragrance of rubbing alcohol without the vaporous chemical astringency. The principal historical use of ambergris was as a fixative in perfumery, though it has now been largely displaced by synthetics.

However, Inuits hunt whales for shelter and food, so that is ok.

whales are killed by people. People hunt them for meat, oil, and skin. Oil spills from oil factories kill them too.the blubber of the whale (fat)is used to make lipsticks and shoe polish.
