Queen Mary I of Scotland [December 8, 1542-February 8, 1587] became Mary, Queen of Scots, at the age of 6 days, upon the death of her father, King James V [April 10, 1512-December 14, 1542]. She was crowned nine months later. She was married, and widowed, three times: to King Francis II of France [January 19, 1544-December 5, 1560], in 1558; to Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley [December 7, 1545-February 10, 1967], in 1565; and to James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell [c.1534-April 14, 1578], in 1565. The Queen was imprisoned at Loch Leven Castle, 1567-1568 and forced to abdicate, on June 15, in favor of her son by her second marriage, King James VI of Scotland [June 19, 1566-March 27, 1625]. Her resignation of the throne took place during the childhood of William Shakespeare [baptized April 16, 1564-April 23, 1616].
