Fact is that the original idea to develop an already phenomenally successfull Thai energy drink called Krating Daeng (or roughly translated red bull), into a drink acceptable to European palates which was also to be called Red Bull emerged in 1984. And that all those things that go without saying for us today were developed with much attention for detail over three long years of research. The original drink underwent some minor modifications such as adding carbonation and somewhat reducing the glucose content. This three year development saw the birth of the concept for product positioning. The drink had enjoyed immense popularity in Thailand since the early seventies but mainly among truck drivers, construction workers and farmers. The stroke of genius of Dietrich Mateschitz was to develop a marketing and image concept for an Asian energy drink with a low class and workers image into a premium product brand for European consumers. One of the first slogans was "Red Bull vitalizes body and mind" and the unique slogan "Red Bull gives you wiiings!"
Fact is that, until 1987, nobody thought that a functional drink previously unknown in the western world, packaged in a can and sold at a premium price, would ever stand a chance.
The Thai drink was discovered by Dietrich Mateschitz (born May 20, 1944 in Sankt Marein im Mürztal, Styria), an Austrian businessman and billionaire who at the time was a sales manager for Blendax toothpaste on a business trip to the Thai maker's of the original drink. He was was impressed by Krating Daeng's ability to help him over his jet lag and he set up a joint venture, now Red Bull G.m.b.H with the owners of Krating Daeng (who in addition the owning the Thai red bull drinks company, happened to be Thai agents for his company's product, Blendax toothpaste) in which he was given a 49% holding which he still maintains today. The other 51% remained in the hands of the original Thai ownerswith Chaleo and Chalerm Yoovidhya with the launch in Austria in 1987. The Austrian Red Bull G.m.b.H. appears as a subsidiary in the accounts of T.C. Pharmaceuticals, Bangkok, Thailand.
Dietrich Mateschitz is of Croatian heritage. He lives in Salzburg, but also owns Laucala Island, off Fiji, which he bought from the Forbes family for Ł 7 million. He holds 49 percent of shares in the energy drink producer Red Bull. Mateschitz was raised by two primary-school-teacher parents who separated when he was very young. Although never married, he reportedly has a son. He rarely drinks alcohol and does not smoke, and his friends include Bernd Pischetsrieder, the former Volkswagen boss. He holds a pilot's licence and enjoys flying a Falcon 900 and a Piper Super Cub.
After taking ten years to graduate from the Hochschule für Welthandel (now Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration) with a marketing degree, Mateschitz's first employer was Unilever, where he got to grips with detergents. He subsequently moved to Blendax, the German cosmetics company since bought by Procter & Gamble, where he worked on, among other things, in the marketing of Blendax tooth paste. It was as part of his travels for Blendax that he discovered the drink that would later become Red Bull. In 1984, he founded Red Bull GmbH Subsequently, he turned the Red Bull drink into the world market leader among energy drinks. Beside the crystal group Swarovski, the candy producer Manner, and the lingerie company Palmers, Red Bull is Austria's only consumer brand with a worldwide reputation.
The motto of Red Bull GmbH is 'No Red Bull. No Wings.'.
