∙ 12y agoOn the [Roman Catholic] Feast Day of Corpus Christi, Spanish explorer Alonso Alvarez de Pineda discovered a lush semi-tropical bay (Corpus Christi Bay). The bay took the name of the feast day celebrating the "Body of Christ."

In 1527, he was part of an expedition that got lost in Florida. He would wonder along the coast until he reached Mexico, with the goal of returning to the colony at what is now Mexico City.
He did reach the city and returned to Spain, but later returned to the Americas as governor of Brazil.
