Her captain was Stanley Lord, who had only been in command of her for a year at the time of the disaster.

He had to face some tough questioning at the Official Enquiry into the disaster as to why the Californian did not go to Titanic's rescue when she was only 10 miles from the scene- he was dismissed by the Leyland Line (Californian's owners) in disgrace, and whilst never being convicted of any offence, he was thereafter always regarded as a pariah. He never succeeded in clearing his name, despite repeated attempts to do so.

The Californian was requisitioned as a merchant ship at the outbreak of WW1 and sunk on 9th November 1915 by the German submarine U-35 some 61 miles off Cape Matapan in Greece. Only one life was lost- her wreck has yet to be found, but it's believed to lie in shallow water and is only 200 miles from the wreck site of the Titanic's sister, Britannic, which went down the following year whilst serving as a hospital ship.

Lord himself died on 24th January 1962, at the age of 84

Was the captain of the californian reprimanded for not responding to the titanic?

i dont think so but im not sure if im wrong sorry

Why didn't the californian respnd to the titanic's help?

It has never been fully explained, but at the enquiry it was established that the Californian's officers saw distress rockets but no-one on board treated them seriously. The Californian had a wireless telegraphy set and an operator, but a single operator could not keep watch 24 hours per day and the Californian's operator was in bed. The Captain was also in bed and it didn't occur to anyone to wake up the wireless operator, so they missed the whole thing.

What did the captin of the Titanic do wrong?

Not slowing down in a dangerous situation. Actually, the captain was getting annoyed because of everyone calling him that when the californian called him to warn him he said SHUT UP. So its the captains problem.

Why didn't the Californian receive the Titanic's telegraph message for help?

Some reports indicate that the radio operator on the Californian had turned his radio off after having received a rude complaint from the Titanic radio operator. The Titanic radio operator had complained that the frequent iceberg warnings from the Californian were interfering with him sending personal radio messages from the Titanic passengers.

What ship didn't respond to the Titanic?

Most vessels within range of her powerful wireless did receive it, but were unable to make it to the scene in time before she went down. The one vessel that did not receive the SOS signsl was the small British liner Californian, the reasons for this being that she was stuck in pack ice and also the wireless operator was not on duty to hear her distress calls. The Californian was only 10 miles distant from Titanic and the Board of Enquiry after the disaster heavily criticised her captain for not having taken adequate measures to respond to any nearby vessels that were in distress.
