Tesco is recorded as having provided the world's first operational Business-to-Consumer (B2C) teleshopping system in 1984. Prior to this, ecommerce already existed in the form of Business-to-Business (B2B) services, but these services were not provided for consumers (ie- "home shoppers").

Tesco's online shopping system was made possible by systems developed by Rediffusion Computers, and invented by the company's founder, Michael Aldrich, in 1979.

Her first purchase was in May 1984. She was part of a long-running home shopping experiment conducted by her City's Social Services Department assisted by Tesco and by Rediffusion Computers who loaned the system. The Gateshead Shopping Experiment is famous for both achievements and participants. Inspired by Ross Davies [later Oxford Institute of Retail Manahyhdfssgement]; computer system from Michael Aldrich inventor of online shopping;Tesco later one of the world's most admired companies and Gateshead later a shopping mecca as well as a city with a reputation for caring for its less advantaged citizens.

Online shopping or e-shopping pre-dates the internet/www. It was invented by Michael Aldrich in 1979 in the UK. During the 1980s it was used in the UK for both Business-to-Business and Business-to-Consumer transactions. In 1994 it migrated to the internet and became widespread after 2000. The term e-shopping is relatively recent since 2000.

In order to prove that the process would work, Aldrich used an efficient technology that has Videotex. Two years after the launch of online shopping, the first business-to-business transaction happened with the initiative from Thomson Holidays. After this, both business-to-consumer as well as business-to-business transactions were widely used in the area in the 1980s.

The first Business-toConsumer online shopping system was Gateshead SIS/Tesco in 1984. The application developer was John Phelan who built an online shopping basket [as he called it] into his system. He designed a more advanced system for Bradford Centrepoint/Wm Morrison in 1986/7. Both were UK supermarket shopping systems. Phelan was a colleague of Michael Aldrich the inventor of online shopping. In the 1990s the online shopping cart was patented in the USA, same functionality different name.
