Sophia is the Greek word for wisdom, so whenever we see 'wisdom' in The Bible, we could replace this by 'sophia'. Some of these references are actually to a spirit/goddess called Wisdom, or sometimes 'Lady Wisdom'. She appears in the oldest passages of the Book of Proverbs and in some other ealry Jewish writings, as well as bing mentioned in the gospels. Sophia entered Jewish belief during or after the Babylonian Exile, apparently as a more acceptable replacement for the goddess Asherah. Her veneration or worship continued until around the end of the first century CE.
