Rabbi Moses Maimonides (1135-1204) was one of the greatest Jewish thinkers and authors ever; and was the first person to write a systematic code of all Jewish law, based upon the Talmud. We call him Rambam in Hebrew, an acronym of Rabeinu Moshe ben Maimon (Rabbi Moshe the son of Maimon). He was a Rishon, living in a time period in Jewish history called the period of the Rishonim (early Rabbis; 10th to 16th centuries CE). Among his many writings are the Moreh Nevuchim - A Guide to the Perplexed; and Peirush HaMishnayos L' HaRambam - Explanation of the Mishnah. His magnum opus is the Mishneh Torah - fourteen volumes codifying the Halachos (Jewish law).
