brian wilson
While Brian Wilson is considered the Beach Boy's bassist, that role only applied to the band's early years. In concert, Brian played bass until he stopped touring with the group. He was temporarily replaced by Glen Campbell, then permanently replaced by Bruce Johnston. A series of sidemen filled in when Bruce left the group for a short period.
On recordings, Brian seldom played bass himself. While The Beach Boys were competent musicians, sessions moved faster when Brian brought in studio musicians to record the instrumental tracks. Among the studio musicians who have played bass on Beach Boys tracks are Ray Pohlman, Carol Kay, Joe Osborn and occasionally Larry Knechtel. All were part of a group of session musicians called "The Wrecking Crew." Carol Kaye is perhaps the most prominent bassist on Beach Boys recordings. She played on "California Girls", "Good Vibrations" and "Wouldn't It Be Nice," among others. Many people credit her melodic bass playing as inspiring Paul McCartney's playing on The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's album.
