The sources are vague about the location of the original pantheon with most of the ancient sources saying it was on the Campus Martius. The exact location was not considered necessary as at the time of the ancient writers, everyone knew where the Field of Mars was or had been. Modern sources claim that the pantheon that is standing today was built in the same spot where Agrippa's original had stood.

The Pantheon was first built between 27 and 25 A.D. by Marcus Agrippa during the reign of the emperor Augustus (27 B.C.-14 A.D.). The ancient Roman historian Cassius Dio wrote that this temple was destroyed by a fire in 80 and was restored during the reign of the emperor Domitian (81-96). It was destroyed by a fire caused by lighting in 110 and was completely rebuilt. The historian Herbert Bloch argued, in a 1959 paper, argued that that it was rebuilt by the emperor Hadrian. This has become the established view. However, in 2006, Lise Hetland argued that this reconstruction was started in 114 under the emperor Trajan (reigned 98-117). Bloch excluded bricks dating back to the reign of Trajan from his study of the brick stamps of this building. The bricks of the rebuilt Pantheon date from 115-127. Heilmeyer, in a contribution to the Conference on the Pantheon in Bern in 2006, argued that stylistic evidence suggests that its design was by Apollodorus of Damascus, who was Trajan's architect. If the works were started under Trajan, they were completed under the emperor Hadrian (reigned 117-138). The rebuilding was completed in 128.
