WAY too subjective a question. The answer depends entirely on whom you ask. Fitzgerald, Faulkner, Hemingway, King, Koontz...there are certainly writers who are in the top of their field, but I doubt you'd ever get much agreement on who's the best of the bunch.

There is no ONE in particular, it usually goes by category. It would probably fall into an argument of about 5 to 10 authors. A few of them are Stephen King, JK Rowling, James Ellroy, and Danielle Steel.

However, if you go on sales of books, then Charles Dickens is the best writer.
