Who is pain in naruto Shippuden?

Pein (or Pain) is what became of Nagato, the former orphan student of Jiraiya. By being around war and loss all the time Nagato wanted to create a world where everyone would feel pain and not just him (hence the name). He used the rinnegan to transmigrate (basically reincarnate) the spirits of the former people back into their bodies also with a piece of his spirit inside of the bodies too. With their spirits it allows them to still use the jutsu they used when they were alive before and with Nagato's spirit in the body as well it allows him to control them (also by using those strange piercings which are actually chakra recievers). Many think that the real Pein (Nagato) is hiding away somewhere and controlling the bodies through his rinnegan like they were puppets. The fact remains that Pein is still pretty unknown but the next few chapters of Naruto Shippuuden should clear that up. -RokudouRinnegan
pein is a member of the atasuki and is not the pein they show those are just parts of him his really held up forced to fight

Pain is the identity assumed by Nagato, one of the orphans from the village of Hidden Rain who were trained by Jiraiya. He acts through the bodies of six dead men, among them his childhood friend Yahiko, who are controlled by him with chakra transmitting needles. pain is six paths of pain..... it is six different dead people that is fused in wit the six paths of the rinnegan so it becomes the six paths of pain. there is an animal path human path and a demon path and god paths

Yes and No. Konan assists, and also Madara Uchiha is the true leader of Akatsuki. Madara was the founder of Akatsuki, too. Pain does act as the leader though, until Madara is revealed.
