When did Boudicca's fight against the Romans happen and why?
Boudicca's fight against the Romans happened in 60 AD after the
death of her husband, Pratsutagus. Pratsutagus was an ally of Rome
and it is said that he owed the Roman governors money. In his will,
trying to protect his wife and daughters, he willed half of his
kingdom to Rome and the other half to Boudicca. Now under Roman
law, a man's debts were paid from his will and most important in
this case, a woman could not inherit from her husband or from any
male. (Just a minor amount was all that was allowed a woman from a
man's estate) Pratsutagus and Boudicca did not know this and when
Boudiccca tried to claim her inheritance she was turned away, by
being whipped and her two daughters raped. She got a little testy
after this and began the war.
