Apparently the Vatican commissioned Osamu Tezuka & Osamu Dezaki to adapt the Old Testament into anime (it's called Tezuka Osamu no Kyuuyaku Seisho Monogatari) so there's an argument to be made for St. John Paul II the Great to fill this role.
