Musical theater, as we call such today, was an outgrowth of the late nineteenth/early twentieth century stage presentations known as "operettas". Operettas, in turn, were lighthearted contrast pieces to Grand Opera, which was always very heavy and serious in tone. Audiences were so enthusiastic about the operettas that the demand became very strong, and helped make the career of such men as Jacques Offenbach and Johann Strauss, Jr. As the 20th century began, names like von Reznicek, Herbert and Romberg were the most noted in the field, and the shows had come to the large American cities, where there sure-fire format of boy meets girl/boy loses girl, boy gets girl back, and the tuneful melodies made them almost guaranteed successes. The next generation of writers, composers and lyricists included names like Jerome Kern, Richard Rodgers, Lorenz Hart, Oscar Hammerstein, Cole Porter, and eventually Steven Sondheim, Leonard Bernstein and Sheldon Harnick/Jerry Bock, continuing in an unbroken line up to today with productions like Bono's "Batman". Musical theater has been around for a very long time - and has been evolving constantly. But it is an evolved medium, and I'm not sure you could say anybody "invented" it.
Ancient peoples have from time immemorial used music, song and dance and drama to act out hunting stories- this is the basis of modern music drama.
