In the ninth century, Constantinople sent missionaries to parts of Russia, establishing Churches, and by the late ninth century the brothers Cyril and Methodius

began missionary journeys among the Slavs in Belorus

and the Ukraine, and developed an alphabet which became precursor to the Cyrillic or Russian alphabet, enabling the translation of scripture, hymns, and the Divine Liturgy. In the late tenth century, Kievan

Princess Olga was baptize into Christianity, as were other members of the Royal household. Prince Vladmir

of Russia, Olga's grandson, ruled as a pagan for several decades. In 987, he sent envoys to find out about the religions in the world, including Islam, Judaism, Christianity. At this point in history, there was only one Christian Church, but Prince Vladmir's

envoys visited both Roman and Constantinopolitian

Churches. The religions the envoys explored were rejected for various reasons, but when the envoys visited Constantinople and attended the Divine Liturgy in the Church of the Holy Wisdom, they reported, "We no longer knew whether we were in heaven or on earth, nor such beauty, and we know not how to tell of it."

Prince Vladmir

was baptised as an Christian, taking the name Basil. He married Anna, the daughter of the Byzantine Empire. Upon returning to Kiev, he demolished pagan temples, and built Churches and monasteries.

Ultimately, when the Great Schism between Eastern Orthodoxy and Roman Catholicism divided Christendom in 1054, the Russians continued to practice the faith of the Eastern Christian Church, which came to be known as the Orthodox Church.
