Antarctica is divided up by several countries as many made claims.

many countries have their own section of antarctica that they have applied for, but they can't do everything they want on it even though they own it. a decleration was signed by like 80 countries that outlined the rules and regulations of antarctica for the next 50 years, this was signed in 1994, i believe. It was meant to be signed in 80's but a few countries did not want to sign the treaty as antarctica has good mining oppurtunity's.

in terms of who controls antarctica, Australia has the biggest portion than any other country so technically that could count as control but a couple of south American countries i believe one of them is Chile, have a large tourist trade with antarctica and are also the closest to antarctica with islands basically bordering the continent. so a country like Chile ma have more political power through those terms. It was also Chile where i believe the decleration was signed.

Another Answer

Several countries claim territory in Antarctica, however, no claim is legitimate. The Antarctic Treaty system, signed in 1961 negates all existing claims and prohibits future claims. The continent -- and all of earth south of 60 degrees South Latitude -- is governed by the treaty.

Many different countries have claim over Antarctica. These include France, Chile, Argentina, Australia, United Kingdom, Norway, New Zealand, and Brazil has unofficially claimed a portion, as well as Nazi Germany taking a portion called New Swabia. Of course Nazi Germany was a while ago, and no longer relevant. This claim has not been in effect since 1945. In total their are seven countries claiming actual portions of eight territories. Norway has claimed two of the eight. Their are also several countries that would like to claim territory, but are unable to due to the Antarctica Treaty.

No one does. It is a free land owned by no man, country or state etc.

Under the Antarctic Treaty, which governs the planet earth south of 60 degrees South Latitude, no country can "own" any part of the Antarctic continent.

However, seven countries have officially claimed territory on Antarctica, and several of these countries formally recognise the other countries' claims, even though these claims are unofficial, under to the current terms of the Treaty.

The countries are permitted to use the territory for scientific purposes, as long as they remain within the terms of the Antarctic Treaty. In some cases, these territories are also shared with other nations who do not have claims. Australia, for example, shares it territory with Russia, which has several research stations in the Australian Antarctic Territory.

The countries which claim territory on Antarctica are:

  • Australia
  • New Zealand
  • United Kingdom
  • France
  • Norway
  • Chile
  • Argentina

Apparently, Australia's claim -- which, like all territorial claims on the continent was invalidated by the Antarctic Treaty in 1960 -- appears to be the largest. Note that there are overlapping claims in these data: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Territorial_claims_in_Antarctica

Officially no-one. Although I expect there are a few countries and people who may dispute that.
