The circus Maximus was built in a valley between the Patine Hill and the Aventine Hill. A stream that run though the valley was channeled and the area was drained. Water management and drainage works had to be carried out several times over the centuries. The first seating was made for the aristocracy and covered only a small area. The seating was gradually extended, but it was only with Julius Caesar that it was completed (in the 40 BC). He also built a canal between the track and the seats to drain the track and to protect the spectators. Augustus built a monumental structure by the track and erected an Egyptian obelisk, but left the seating in wood. It was replaced by stone seating by Trajan in 103 AD.
