theOld Testament book of 1 Samuel (17:4) says that Goliath was from the Philistine city of Gath. Gath was one of the five city-states of the Philistines (Gath, Gaza, Ekron, Ashkelon, and Ashdod).

The exact location of Gath has not been identified, but most recent archaeological evidence suggests the mound of Tell es-Safi (the Hebrew name)/Tel-Zafit (the Arabic name). It is in central Israel, roughly half way between Jerusalem and Askelon, between the southern Coastal Plain and the Judean foothils (31°41 59.23 N latitude, 34°50 48.77 E longitude).
