The Portuguese discovered the sea route to, and from, India. For Bartolomeu Dias [c. 1450-May 29, 1500] proved by his expedition of 1487-1488 that it was possible to sail down and around Africa, into the Indian Ocean, and on to India. Previously, trade with India had been by the overland route. And that route was controlled by Muslim middlemen.

The Caravel was a Portuguese ship used for exploration along the West African coast. This enabled the Portuguese to colonize the African coasts, discover a route to India and to engage in slave trade. The Portuguese captured the African and sold them into slavery. Portuguese occupation led to the destruction of coastal African societies.
Portugal led the way in the search for a sea route to Asia. Portuguese explorers like Vasco da Gama successfully navigated around the southern tip of Africa to reach India in 1498, opening up direct trade with the East.
