Assuming we are talking about the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS), the 1997 Miata -- (and presumably earlier years) locates this switch on the rear of, or perhaps internal to (I don't know), the speedometer. Examine the schematic for your Instrument Cluster and look for a reed switch labeled Vehicle Speed Sensor. On 1997 Miata, one end is connected to Instrument Cluster connector C-01, terminal 2F, and the other end to ground. Essentially, as the speedometer rotates, the switch opens and closes, shorting terminal 2F to ground, thus creating a series of pulses proportional to the vehicle speed. In the 1997 Miata, this signal is used by the Engine Control Module, the Automatic Transmission (if equipped), the Cruise Control Module (if equipped), and the audio system (if a Type 2 OEM system is installed).
