1. Mason Dixon Line: A stone-made line that separates the Middle colonies from the Southern colonies.
Originally, the Mason-Dixon line was a border between Maryland and Delaware established to settle an 80-year-old border dispute.
Later, it was an imaginary line that extended farther west during the Civil War that separated the free states from the slave states. The free states were to the north and the slave states were on the south of the line. Though Delaware was a slave state, it was north of the Mason-Dixon Line.
If you look at a map of the United States, you can see the line. It is basically the Southern border of Pennsylvania, which makes it part of the borders of what is now West Virginia and Maryland. It also forms the Eastern border of Maryland.
The Mason-Dixon line solved the boundary problems between Maryland and Pennsylvania. It runs along the agreed southern border between both states and then drops 90 degrees south to clarify the border between Maryland and Delaware. The lines were drawn by the surveyors Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon.in the late 1760's.
It became the "traditional" border that separated the North and the South.
