There are so many false traditions about how Paul died, but we do not really know how or where Paul died. Certainly it seems likely that he was taken as a prisoner to Rome, so it is possible that he died there. If there was a trial in Rome, we do not really know whether he was acquited, executed or otherwise punished.

Paul might have died peacefully of old age, or he might have been executed by the Romans. Since he is thought to have been a Roman citizen, an execution would have been carried out by beheading.

AnswerAccording to Christian tradition, all the apostles seem to have sufferred terrible deaths, although nothing is known that would verify any of these persecutions. Most Christian traditions that claim Paul to have been executed say he was beheaded, but there is nothing that can support these traditions. In fact, we do not know how or when Paul died, and neither The Bible nor any other contemporary source provides any useful information on the subject.

There is a Christian tradition, believed to have begun around the end of the second century, that St. John was boilef in oil but miraculously escaped unharmed.

There is no information in the Bible or any contemporary source as to what happened to John after the death of Jesus. Many imaginative Christian traditions sprang up in the second and third centuries about the travels and martyrdoms of all the disciples, including John, but there is no proof to support any of these traditions.

A popular tradition about John is that Emperor Domitian ordered him brought as a prisoner to Rome and thrown into a vat of boiling oil. John was unharmed by the boiling oil, and he was eventually exiled under guard in Patmos. Not only is the alleged episode of the boiling oil entirely implausible, the alleged exile proves it to be so. If John was immune to harm, as shown by his escape from the boiling oil, he could scarcely have been restrained by armed guards, who also would have been totally unable to harm him. The tradition links John to Patmos because the Book of Revelation was written by a person called John, and this journey was necessary in order to identify the apostle John with the author of Revelation.

AnswerNo, John did not boil in oil.

From the second century onwards, Christianity was beginning to develop traditions about how each of the apostles died bravely for their beliefs in Jesus, often martyred in the most gruesome fashion. It may well be that in his earliest tradition that the apostle John was supposed to have died by being slowly boiled in oil.

However, John had to be saved, because the Book of Revelation is signed by a person called John and, later in the second century, it was decided that this John was actually the disciple John. So the tradition became one in which John was boiled in oil but was miraculously unharmed, so the Roman emperor exiled him to the island of Patmos. Never mind that if the Romans could not harm John by boiling him in oil, they could scarcely have forced him to go to Patmos, or that trading ships frequently stopped at Patmos and he could haveembarked any time he liked. The story of John being boiled in oil but being saved by God to continue his work, became one of the most beloved stories of the early Christian martyrs. But it never happened.

The event of Paul being boiled in oil is not mentioned in the Bible. It is a tradition found in some early Christian writings, but there is no scriptural reference to support it.
