Racoon's live in every state of the Union except Alaska and Hawaii. They are right at home in hardwood forests, on prairies, in farmlands or in people's neighborhoods. Racoon's never live far from water be it a lake , pond , stream , march or ocean. Raccoons are not true hibernators like bears, so they can wake up easily. Their fat and thick winter coats help them stay warm and give them the energy they need to survive the winter.

Raccoon are mammals found in many cool to temperate areas in North America. Originally forest dwellers, they have also become scavengers in cities and suburbs.

Human introductions have led to raccoons become problem pests in Germany, and to a lesser extent in Japan.

Yes, raccoons are found in North American deserts. They usually establish their home range close to permanent water, however. I work with wildlife in the Chihuahuan Desert and frequently have orphaned raccoons dropped off at my facility. Right now I have two such orphans that were dropped off as newborn babies about 6 months ago. They are now young adults and will soon be released back to the wild along the Rio Grande River of the Chihuahuan Desert.

Raccoons are a very adaptable animal and can be found in a variety of habitats, including in major cities and towns.

Some raccoons live in trees, but it is possible that you'd find them under your deck! Raccoons like cottonwood trees to live in.
