This show is based on an Avatar named Aang who was frozen for 100 years then he was freed by Katara (water bender) and Sokka. He then sets on a journey along with Katara and Sokka to dethrone or destroy fire lord Ozai who wants to take over the world. And as they journey they meet people and friends, like they met Momo and of course they had Appa, the flying bison to help them transport. And on their way, they meet a blind earth bender name Toph, and she's a girl. Toph ended up being part of the journey. While they are journeying they face tons of obstacles, one of them is the fire lord's son name, Zuko. Zuko seeks honor so he desires to prove his honor to his father by capturing the avatar. In the end, he didn't want to be that prince who seeks honor so he ended up joining the avatar to dethrone The Fire Lord. In the end, they did dethrone the fire lord and Zuko became the new fire lord.
And it is also base on Elements: Water, Fire, Earth, and Air.
Aang: Avatar (bends all elements, frozen 100 years)
Katara: Water Bender (became Aangs wife, Blood bender)
Sokka: Non-Bender (use a bummer aang)
Toph: Earth Bender (Blind, Metle Bendes)
Prince Zuko: Fire Bender (son of The Fire Lord, Bends Lightning)
Appa: Flying Bison (frozen for 100 years with Aang)
Momo: Unknown (a bat-like creature that air benders have)
Princess Azula: Fire Bender (daughter of the Fire Lord, Enemy to Aang, Bends blue fire)
Ty-Lee: Non-Bender (known as circus girl, friend to Azula and Mai)
Mai: Non-Bender (friend to Azula and Ty-Lee, good with blades, Zuko's girlfriend and soon became Zuko's wife)
Ozai: Fire Bender (father to Zuko and Azula, husband to Ersa, wants to rule the world, Fire Lord)
Ersa: Non-Bender (became wife to Ozai, mother to Zuko and Azula)
Uncle Iroh: Fire Bender (strongest fire bender [except Aang], bends blue and red fire, and bends lightning, loves to drink tea, brother of Ozai, General of the fire nation, a good friend)
There are tons of characters but not for now.
According to my opinion of Avatar the Last Air bender (not sure that I'm right), it is based on the 4 sections of the Thunder Kata. You may know this if you know karate. The four sections are : Earth, Air, Water, and Fire. And it can make sense that the Fire Nation can bend lightning because it is one of the last sections that make the thunder kada ( I think). That's only my opinion, not a true fact.
it is based on a child of old man in a child of a 12 year old who was supposed to become the avatar but did not so he ran with his bison appa and crash landed into the ocean after he met his lover katara and his BI brother sokka
they traveled the whole world just to look for a teacher to teach him earth,fire and water he already knew airbending very well so he found one firebending teacher but did not workout he met a girl that thought him earthbending it was a blind child and she was toph yep toph is her name she is toph oh and also him and katara learned waterbending so after the other firebender guy got fired zuko prince of the fire nation you see they were trying to stop the fire nation from destroying the world especially zuko dad firelord ozai okay so they agreed and learned fire bending you can finish the rest im tired
