The memoirs of the reporter H.M.Stanley, who was sent by an American newspaper to try to find the popular Scottish explorer.
The story appealed to the public, as a gracious and somewhat witty greeting after months of gruelling struggle through the bush.
Like many reports from remote places, which cannot be confirmed or corrected, the story is now considered dubious.

Stanley was a reporter.
"Doctor Livingstone, I presume" - according to his own memoirs, but almost certainly made up, like so many colourful stories from remote outposts that cannot be verified. Livingstone, of course, died soon after, so nobody was able to ask him what was actually said.

Dr. David Livingstone and Dr. Henry Stanley met in Africa. Livingstone was a Scottish missionary and explorer, while Stanley was an American journalist sent to find Livingstone by the New York Herald in 1869. Their meeting in Africa in 1871 became famous with Stanley allegedly saying, "Dr. Livingstone, I presume."
