It is really hard to locate local shops that carry big bore air rifles. All you can usually find are .177 caliber or maybe .22 caliber. I like shooting .25 and larger calibers, usually PCP's (PreCharged Pneumatics) The best places are on the WEB places like Pyramyd Air, Air guns of Arizona or XP-Airguns.
See the links below.
Air Rifles come in several different bores. .177, .20, .22, .25, 9mm, 45 Cal, 357, and 50 Cal. Big bore usually refers to the 9mm, 45 Cal and 50 Cal. These rifles fall into the PCP class of Air Rifles.
Big bore rifles are generally considered to be 40 caliber and above.
The bore is the inside of the barrel of the gun. Bore dimension for most rifles is caliber, which is the bore diameter in fractions of an inch or in millimeters. Some older big game rifles had designations such as "12 bore", which is bore diameter the size of a shotgun barrel of the same gauge. Gauge is the number of round balls fitting the bore that can be made from a pound of lead.
The most common ammo is the .177 BB or .177 pellet. However some pellets come in 20cal, 22cal, 25cal and the larger 45 and 50 cal pellets. That are used in the big bore PCP Air Rifles.

Answering this question is not as simple as it sounds. I suggest you read the attached link ( http://www.straightshooters.com/general-airgun-information.html) it gives some great information about effective ranges with a .25 caliber pellet. Also I applicate the statement that a .25 is big bore pellet. Unfortunately it is considered small bore. A big bore would be a .45 or 50 Caliber pellet. Also remember that the air rifle power plant has a lot to do with the range. I own a .25 cal Hatsan break barrel and a .25 Caliber Condor PCP air rifle. Obviously the Condor has a further range than the Hatsan. This is why manufactures don't publish the range of the air rifles. there are just too many factors to consider like Barrel length, Weight of the pellet and power plant of the air rifle.
Most common air rifles are designed to shoot targets and small rodents like rats, squirrels and rabbits. However I suggest you shoot these rodents with a pellet rifle not a BB rifle. BB's do not deform when they hit a target and will make the rodent suffer, where as pellets will deform and make a quick kill. If you really get into shooting with a pellet rifle then you can move up to the big bore air rifles. Let me explain. BB's come in one size .175, pellets come in several different sizes and bigger bore rifles like, .177, .20, .22, .25, 9mm, 45 Cal and 50 cal. the last 3 sizes require a scuba tank to charge the rifle and will drive a large pellet at over 1000 feet per second. These are capable of bringing down a Boar or larger animal. These rifles are called PCP (PerCharged Pneumatic ) rifles and guns.
just the sheer size of the .22 caliber pellet will do more damage than a .177 pellet. Here are the sizes of pellets today that are on the market. .177, .20, .22, .25, 9mm, 45 cal and 50 cal. The last 3 are usually restricted to PCP air rifles. (Big Bore)
The letters bb before the serial number indicate that you have a Winchester model 1894 Big Bore rifle that was made from 1983 onward. These rifles will sell for between 275-400 dollars depending on caliber, overall condition and a good bore.
It depends on the size game you want to hunt. Gamo makes a line of small game hunting rifles like the big cat or the Benjamin trail XL. If you are looking to hunt larger game look at something that fires a larger .22 or.25 caliber pellet. If you want to go for really big game then look into the PCP (PreCharged Pneumatic) class of air rifles. Like the Marauder .25 Caliber. Marauder also comes in .177 and .22. Or the really big Sam Yang big bore 44 (it's a 45 caliber air rifle) and will bring down an elk. I suggest you read the owners reviews on the attached web site below and make a selection.
