Not really; Columbus arrived in Bahamas, then went to Santo Domingo and finally Cuba before returning to Spain. He never touch North America land. The Americas were explored in the 1500's,not discovered.

Common misconception, Christopher Columbus did not discover N. America nor did he ever see North America. It was a European voyage headed by John Cabot (an Italian navigator) that discovered America with the help of the Chinese inventedcompass.

The answer above is very incorrect ,John Cabot wanted to find a northern passage{sent by king Henry}, and ended up in Canada but founded northern parts of north America. John Cabot did not set foot on north America until a few years after Columbus did, Columbus founded San Salvador {island of the Bahamas}

The answer also above is a common misconception, north America was actually discovered the same time as Greenland which continentally speaking is part of the Americas. Eric the Red from Norway discovered Greenland while Leif Ericsson carried on until he hit the coast of America, aoens before Cabot or Columbus.

How can a person say that they were the FIRST to discover a place,When that place already had people living there??

The Native Americans were the very first ones who did. Historians say that Native Americans may have come from Asia and come to North America by crossing a bridge that once connected Russia and Alaska. Another theory is that they came to North America by boat. No one knows for sure.

Centuries later when people didn't know that the Americas were on the other side of the worldand the Native Americans didn't know about Asia, Africa, Europe, and Australia, finally an Italian explorer named Amerigo Vespucci found the Americas and were named after him. The whole world now knew about the new land.

Christopher Columbo ,that was his real name they changed it once he became important, did not discover America. In 1492 Columbo aka "Columbus" landed on the coast of America though he did not know it was America in fact he did not even know that both American continents exacted. He was trying to to reach India , but experienced a problem there where two big chunks of land in the way. And actually came of the ship believing he was in India. Though he can be giving credit for putting America on the map. No the people who truly discovered America people who came from Siberia around 10.000 BC. You know them as Native Americans or Indians. Well it is hard to pin point the exact time when America was discovered. You see every time someone claimed to have discovered America people were already on it. A cording to many historians America was discovered many times by every country. Though I do believe that if my vast knowledge of history is correct it was discovered by the first Native Americans in 10,000 BC they came form Siberia. They went in form Alaska and made there way down to South America. I hope this help at all. But remember the great melting pot!
