The Indian democracy is a legacy of the British Raj. As Britain gave up its empire and granted independence to its former colonies, it tried to do this by establishing democratic governments for the new countries, modeled on the mother of parliaments that had proved so successful for Britain. Sometimes these new countries reverted to (military) dictatorships, but overall the model has worked, especially so for India which is now the largest democracy (by population) on Earth.

On 15 August 1947, India gained independence from British rule.

It is democratic because the Indian people recognised that the democratic form of government as developed by and learned from the British, was the best system of government man has so far invented and they therfore wanted to adopt it for themselves after independence.
