From what i know, they went to find weapons and bombs of mass destruction. I've heard rumors that they went revenge for 9/11 as well. I don't know exactly and I don't think that the US government will be telling us anytime soon.
Americans do not hate Iraq. The US Government believed Iraq had weapons of mass destruction and was harboring terrorist organizations. After discovering that neither was truly the case, the US remained in Iraq to finish the job of reconstruction and protecting the new democratic government.
The justification for the US going to war with Iraq is slightly open to question and debate. The main reason given was because they believed Iraq had weapons of mass destruction and they had to be disarmed. Many believe it was simply to remove Saddam Hussein though and some even think it was for reasons of oil.

Weapons of mass destruction have never been used against the US. In fact, the US is the only country that has ever used an atomic bomb against another country and that was Japan during the second World War.
