Sometime in the 1880s, Prof. Heinrich Hertz succeeding in generating long-wave
electromagnetic radiation and then detecting it all the way over on the other side
of the laboratory, without wires. Having had a great day, he didn't want to let
anything spoil it, so he took the phone off the hook, flipped off the light, listened
to the 11:00 news, and went to sleep.
The evolution took place gradually. When radio first began, between 1901-1910, it was a hobby that appealed mainly to amateur experimenters: many electrical engineers and scientists were fascinated by how the signals were transmitted, and many young men (and a few young women) built their own sets, sending Morse Code and also playing music or announcing sports scores. But in 1920, so-called "commercial" radio came along. It did not play commercials at that time -- it got that name because it was owned by businesses, some of whom, like KDKA, owned by a manufacturing company called Westinghouse, hoped to engage in commerce; they hoped to sell radio receivers by having a station of their own. But it wasn't until 1922 that radio took off and expanded in popularity, in what came to be called the "radio craze." As more people got radio sets and more stations went on the air, radio went from being a hobby with a limited number of listeners to a truly mass medium with influence across the country and millions of people listening.
