Looking at the paintings of Van Dyke, Rembrandt, and others, we see that the painting methods were highly stylized and followed a formula. The subject matter was always formulaic and very mathematical. Impressionism depends on a less structured painting style. It's brushwork is more hurried and less blended. The vibrancy of the work is dependent on capturing the moment of the subject rather than a structured still life or portrait pose.
