This knowledge is lost in the remote distant past. We probably started playing "drums" when we first noticed and were fascinated by sounds that come from one object striking another. Hollow logs must have been among the early objects that we experimented with. Who knows when the concept of manufactured drum heas/diaphragms came into use?

the drums started long ago in the "caveman" times with hollow logs and sticks. the hollow log was use as a tom and the sticks were used as the drum sticks or in this case log sticks ^^
i am definitely not an expert, but i believe drums were made to let people of tribes know that an enemy was coming and the warriors should prepare for battle, they would often be made of wood and cow hides or other animal skins stretched tightly around the top of the drum. drums were also used for music to call for rain or for rituals of many tribes. i have also heard that drums were used in war strategy for underground, man made caves for surprise attacks.
Drums being the most simple type of instrument have been used for as far back as recorded history goes.. and farther.
It is likely the very first musical instrument invented, and as such is as old as mankind.
