Italy joined the Six Nations Rugby Championship in 2000, which was effectively the first year of the competition.
Before that date, the Six Nations was known as the Five Nations Rugby Championship, because it was contested between five nations: England, France, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
When Italy joined in 2000 it was renamed the Six Nations Rugby Championship to account for the extra nation.

France joined what was then the Home Nations, making it the Five Nations in 1910. They played in it until 1931 and rejoined in 1947. It was the joining of Italy in 2000 that created the Six Nations.
The 2011 Six Nations Championship was won by England. It was their first Six Nations Championship title since 2003. England won 4 of their 5 Six Nations matches in 2011, only losing to Ireland on the final weekend.
