A so-called "variable", such as "x", depending on the context, can either represent:* As a placeholder for any value, as in: "For any number x, 2x = x + x" (i.e., two times the number is the same as if you add the number to itself),

* As an unknown quantity which you have to solve for, for example: "x + 3 = 10; how much is x?"

Whatever you want! It could represent

  • a variable (in algebra or calculus),
  • a point, line or an angle in geometry,
  • the horizontal displacement in analytical geometry,
  • a kiss,
  • the number 10,
  • an unknown components - eg x-ray, X-factor.
There are probably a lot more besides.
