In the 1600s New York was still mostly wilderness and wetlands. It was full of oak, hickory and chestnut trees. There were also grasslands and salt marshes.

The New York Colony looked very similar to the other colonies at first. The buildings were all made out of wood and there were many trees and water sources in the area.
