Nothing in New Testament scripture tells what type thorny plant was used, so we will probably never truly know. However, rubus sanctus (a type of bramble) grew commonly across the region during that time period. Many believe that this is the same thorny plant that not only made the crown of thorns, but also was the plant in the story of the burning bush.
