I have cared for two wild mute swans for about 5 years now and feed them JJ's sweet feed. It's a blend of grains, wheat and corn that is actually a horse and cattle feed. A 50# bag at the local Agway store is just $10 and they eat about 5# a day at most so the cost is very minimal. Just $1 a day for such a great pleasure! The river is almost totally frozen over and as they need water, I break holes in the ice and put the food in and around the hole. They can reach down almost 3 feet with their long necks.
They do eat aquatic vegetation but if you are feeding them, a grain mix of wheat and corn they will be very happy with! I feed mine JJ's sweet feed and buy it in 50# bags at the local co-op/Agway store. Our two swans eat 5# a day for a very minimal cost of just $1.00 a day. They do get a slice of whole wheat bread each once a week as a treat. DO NOT feed them moldy old bread. Mold is very harmful to them and they could die. I have heard that they like spinach and lettuce but mine will not touch either!
Most of the varieties of swan in the UK are protected species. The mute swan however, is owned by the crown and it is only legal for someone in the royal family to eat or serve them.
The Mute Swan is.
Although a mute swan's diet consists mostly of aquatic vegetation, it can also eat algae, insects, worms, fish, and frogs. Mute swans are native to parts of Europe and Asia.
The Mute Swan (Cygnus olor) is not altogether silent as the name suggests. It is called this because it does not emit sounds in flight, whilst all other swans communicate in the air. On the water the Mute Swan is far from mute and will squawk louder than most.

Well, first the colour. Black swans are ... well... black with a bright red beak and mute swans are white with a black band above the beak and the beak is a orange melting into a red near the tip. Second, mute swans tend to be much quieter than other swans. Mute swans are also one of the heaviest flying birds. Unlike black swans they tend to also be more territorial.

it is called the mute swan because it is virtually silent, the only time it makes a sound is at the last second when it is attacking something. the phrase swan song comes from this bird because although it is mainly silent all its life, just before it dies if sings a somewhat beautiful song.
