The Colosseum is elliptic in shape. It measures 187.5x159.5 metres (615x523 feet) and could host 50,000 spectators. It height is 48.5 metres (159 feet), but it probably was originally 52 metres high (177 feet). The actual arena was 86x54 metres (282x177 feet) and was separated from the seating by a 4 metre high platform.

The Colosseum in Rome covers about 6 acres and measures 617 feet by 512 feet. It rises to a height of 159 feet with a facade including three tiers of arches and an attic. Construction started on it in AD 72 and it opened in AD 80. It is built over a site that once held a lake, part of a palace complex for the emperor Nero. Parts of his palace have now been uncovered and are open to visitors.
