The saddle needs to fit BOTH horse and RIDER. Depending on the seat of the rider a typical pony saddle would have a 10 to 14 inch seat. You will need to have a longer girth on a smaller saddle.

Saddle size depends completely on the pony and it is difficult to say without measuring. The best way to make sure your saddle fits is to have it professionally fitted. Ideally, start out with a "pony" saddle, and your seat size (in English saddles measured from the point of your hip to your knee, in inches, and measured on the saddle from pommel to cantle).

The saddle size, or more specifically the width of the tree, depends on the build of the pony more so than the height. If the pony is of a very petite build (picture a Hackney or small Arabian), a narrow tree would be preferred. On the other hand, a stocky pony (Shetland, for example) would be more likely to need a wide tree. Also consider that width of the generic tree sizes (narrow, medium, wide, extra-wide) changes for each saddle-maker, so search online for a way to measure your pony for tree width before purchasing a saddle. Also, make sure if you do make a purchase that there is a trial period for you to be sure that the saddle fits well, and have an experienced horseperson assess the fit with you and find the best saddle pad to improve fit if necessary!

There is no one standard size that will fit a horse or pony of a certain height. To find your ponys saddle size ( English Saddles) the best thing to do is to take either a metal coat hanger (unbent ) or a flexible drafting curve and lay it over the withers where the saddle would sit and bend the object over the shoulders exactly like they are shaped. Make sure you mark which side is the left and which is the right. Next trace the inner shape of the curve onto a poster board and cut it out. You can take this with you to a tack store and slip it into the gullet of the different saddles until you find one that matches. Next ask if you can have the saddle on trial and take it home. To begin with you should put the saddle on the pony without a saddle pad. Look down the gullet channel, it should in no way touch the spine and it should sit evenly on the back. Next put a girth on the saddle and recheck it. You should be able to get 3 or 4 fingers in-between the gullet and the withers when you are not sitting in the saddle. Now take the saddle off and put it back on with a saddle pad and girth. Check the fit again then mount up. You should now be able to fit 2 to3 fingers in-between the gullet and withers. You should ride the pony around in the saddle and see if it goes well with the new piece of tack. If it does not fit return it. As a note some tack stores will help you to fit a saddle to your horse or pony.

Where can you find a saddle for a Shetland pony?

There is no 'one size fits all' for specific breeds of horses and ponies. It would be best to measure the pony for a saddle or have someone more experienced , like a saddler , try to fit the pony for a saddle.

I can't tell if the western saddle I have is for a pony or a horse how can I tell?

It sounds like you may have a 'youth' saddle. A pony saddle is pretty small and you would be able to tell right away that it was meant for ponies. A youth saddle is meant for that in-between stage when the rider has outgrown a pony saddle and is still to small for a full sized horse saddle. To find out you can measure the saddle's tree. Take a tape measure and start at the pommel and run the tape to the cantle. This will give you an idea of the size of the tree which is what the entire saddle is based on.

How much chaff should you give your pony?

Depends on the weight and what excersise. Maybe one scoop if in heavy excersise and a relitvly large pony such as 14hh up. If below that but still in heavy work 3/4 scoop. If in light work a small handful even if heavy or large weight/size.

What size saddle pad?

For a western saddle most pads will be about the same size unless it's for a pony saddle, which will be much smaller. English saddle pads can vary significantly. Since there are different types of English saddles the pads will correspond with their individual shapes. A dressage saddle will have a dressage pad, likewise hunt seat, saddle seat (with a 3 or 4 inch cutback). Whatever the size or shape, make sure that the pad is thick enough that it protects your horse's back and that it fits right so it won't slip or rub.

Would a 14'2'' horse wear a pony or cob size shipping boots?

A 14'2'' horse would typically wear cob size shipping boots rather than pony size. Cob size is generally more appropriate for horses that are around 14-15 hands high, while pony size is more suitable for horses under 14 hands high.

How can I make sure that my pony's saddle is a perfect fit I have two ponies and only one jumping saddle One is a Welsh A 11 2hh and the other is a Welsh C 12 2hh Could they share the saddle?

If the size of their withers is the same, and the saddle fits them, you could use the saddle on both of them. If you do not know how to tell if a saddle fits, asking an expert you may know or looking for more information about saddle fitting may be helpful.
