It is not named for a god, but for Februa, the Roman festival of purification. However, a god "Februus" was also later named for the festival. February was created, along with January, from the monthless winter period of the early calendar.

Like all the names of the months, the name February (Ferbuarius) comes from the names of the months of the Roman calendar. Februarius was named after the februalia, februatio or feralia, a Roman public festival in hunour of the souls the of the dead (manes) where offerings of grain, salt, bread soaked in wine and violets were made to the graves of the dead ancestors and wreaths were laid on them. It was held on 21 February and was a public celebration which marked the end of the parentaila (13-22 February), a festival where the dead ancestors were honoured privately by families The manes also needed to be appeased. During this period the chief vestal priestess preformed ceremonies daily, temples were closed, no fires burned on altars, marriages were forbidden until the 21st. On 13-15 February the Lupercalia was also performed. This was a festival for the purification of the city, averting evil spirits and for health and fertility.

Later the month of Februarius came to be personified by Ferbruus a god of purification which was also worshiped by the Etruscans with the same name. To the Etruscans he was also a god of riches, death and the underworld.
